Needle ice. Water from the soil is drawn upward when it reaches the cold air, it freezes instantly, adding to the growing ice column. More water continues to rise from below, freezing layer by layer and pushing the structure upward like this.
Totally makes sense. We had our wettest fall in many years right before we got frost. Thanks for the insight!
