The fact that you can't just join #nostr and immediately get a huge following or tons of engagement is a FEATURE not a BUG.

It prevents the low-time-preference grifters and scammers from getting any foothold into our communities. It makes it so that only the highest quality communications and relationships survive on the protocol. It is the best adaptation of human social networking ever invented—where reputation matters most.

And those who have bought and paid for every centralized communication platform today have to start from square one on Nostr, just like everyone else.

It is nice to see a technology that isn’t trying to peddle influence but rather the sharing of ideas and need for conversations and debate about complex topics.

An influence culture generally relies upon having people agree with something, usually some single false “truth”, when the reality of life is often far more nuanced and individualized.

Neither the influencer nor the influenced win in these paradigms btw, because there is no real growth happening, just an inevitable and endless cycle of confirmation bias and progressively narrowed thinking.

#Nostr is likely not immune from this type of thing, but it is nice to experience something different for a change.
