Just starting out your foraging journey?

Your spread reminds me of my excitement when I first started foraging mushrooms.

I couldnt get enough. I brought home everything and spend hours in my books.

Eventually I started only bringing home the choice edibles.

This though, is a good way to satiate a new found love for the forest.

Every year Im adding another one or two to my diner plate.

Eventually I was able to spot an ID from far away. I started to recognize them as my children.

So much fun. 🤓

My wife is currently using a field guide to identify these. I think she likes this even more than I do.

It is extremely exhilarating once you start to learn the key identifying features.

Bruising and tasting are a few key characteristics after the usual more obvious ones. (Not eating, just a tiny nibble and spit). I don’t mess with bolete’s often though - never been a huge fan of them for eating.

One at a time is the way to learn IMO… and agreed that eventually for most people you just have to look for the “choice” aka what you-know-you-wants. As in most people can’t dedicate all their time..

A great reason to walk in the woods… even if you don’t find what you’re looking for, the woods reward you. And learning the trees alongside is awesome.

By the way, “one at a time” doesn’t mean gathering all these and researching isn’t great. It is! Multiple touchpoints just like money/bitcoin…

Love seeing this content.

“One at a time” as far as eating them….

Totally agree. The woods will provide if you listen and learn 👊

Which reminds me. I shall go check out my puffball spot. They should be ready soon.

Mmmmmm puffballs sautéed in amish butter 🤤

The big ones?? I mean little ones also great…

Sadly never found the big ones in my area. Only the small ones and the fake darker small ones
