Looking for some node guidance..

Umbrel running on pi4, through tor

Blue Wallet seems to have trouble maintaining a reliable connection. Sometimes not connecting at all.

Any advice out there?

I’m a very basic noder. Pretty much YouTube educated.

Thats the unreliability of tor in general. Cant change that..can only atttempt reconnects

I suspected this.. so clearnet might improve it? but with a privacy trade-off?

yeah. may be able to reach a middle ground using a tunnel with cloudflare.

I think tor is just half of the story. I had exact same problem with blue wallet on pi4, so I gave it up. But now I have Umbrel on Ubuntu on old laptop with intel i5 4th gen or so. Still tor and the same network setup, but Samourai wallet runs through it like a charm. And basically everything is normally fast. I did not try blue wallet on it, but if you want, I can try and let you know.

Appreciate the input.. could be Blue Wallet? Or a bunch of things I guess hey.. I want to connect the node to a mobile app, so samurai won’t really work for me. And in saying that, is it possible to even connect to a mobile app via clearnet? or only via onion address??.. I need a bitcoin meet-up in my immediate area 🤦🏼‍♂️

It's possible without Tor but always use a VPN. See my other comment.

Pi4 is very limited in the end when running a full node and any other app on umbrel. Would recommend installing umbrel on an old pc if you have one. If you have lightning channels open and you want to migrate to a pc, you can follow this guide. Tor connection is good but not as reliable as having a good VPN through which you can connect to your node on mobile.

I don’t have a spare pc lying around, so my plan: strip back my pi4 to only bitcoin node, electrum, mempool, and nostr relay. Run node on clearnet.. I’ve got NordVPN on mobile, so I should run that 24/7? Or at least strictly when utilising my node-connected wallet? I’m considering moving to Proton VPN too.. Running lightning is beyond me hey. Gave it a go but pretty much had no clue and felt I was just blowing sats

Nostr relay might be too much also. In my experience bitcoin node, electrum, and mempool is the maximum a pi can handle. And yeah I recommend setting the VPN-always mode on in your phone's settings. Mullvad VPN is good if you're looking for a new provider.
