Athena created spiders (Arachne/arachnids) because she tried to kill the chick who beat her ass at a weaving contest.
She's like.. hm, I'm pissed you're better than me but I don't want to kill you and waste your talent so I'm going to make you a little creature with 8 legs so you can still weave.
Still better than what Apollo did when he lost a contest from a mortal
