Whether you own something is a question of Natural Law. It's a God-given right.
Whether your property will be taxed or confiscated by a government is a matter of state law, but you retain the moral right to protect your property and protest the taxation or confiscation.

What if I rent a car and it gets stolen. Was it stolen from me, since I was responsible for it, or from the car rental company ? Even though they weren’t responsible for it at that time
It was in your possession, but it was not your property. So, it was stolen from the rental agency.
Property can be lent out or borrowed.
