One great benefit is that if it gets wet you don't feel cold like with other fabrics (another great reason why hikers like it). Also wool is not slippery on ice (you can use wool socks outside of your shoes on a slippery ice road).
The negative is they tear up easily (if they don't have some elastine)
I have hiking socks, out of cushioned wool, they have a bit of elastine in them, I think. Very stretchy.
