Jan van Eyck’s masterpiece appears to be a simple portrait of Italian merchant Giovanni Arnolfini and his wife, Costanza, but there's much more beneath the surface. The tiny mirror in the background is just 3 inches wide, yet it reflects the entire room with astonishing detail.

Look closely, and you'll see that nothing is quite what it seems…
