element/matrix vs #SimpleX

element/matrix e2e encryption has had a rocky past with many holes. they do have more active rooms though. just don't trust that any of them are secure or e2e enabled.

i remember earlier this year notifying the admins when someone took over the element chat (with admin privileges) and started randomly calling like 15k members in the room as well as clitching the feed. it was a live hack.

tl,dr: i treat it like a public support blog or forum that i don't expect to be secure.

i was an early adopter of SimpleX, since december 2022 and i have had many chats and interactions with the developer, Evgeny.

SimpleX privacy & security is absolutely brilliant. it's still beta but it's growing...fast. the amount of rooms is growing and afaiac rn it is the absolute best out there for private and/or anonymous conversations.

i have always seen it as a Signal killer that could very well be a #matrix killer as well. πŸ€™πŸ»πŸ’œ

Yes, very low network effect though, that might not be a problem.

But real problem is absence of desktop that synchronizes with mobile. SimpleX has a desktop version, but it has a different set of chat profiles and you can't sync unread status.

Element got pretty cool lately, especially with spaces. I don't do 15k rooms though. If there are 15k people, I think encryption kind of stops making sense.

Here's my encrypted messengers blog, I try to keep it up to date.

SimpleX team claims that with the next release it will be possible to use the same profile on desktop as on mobile. It will be nice to have, to say the least.

I think that means that you can migrate from mobile to desktop by exporting from mobile and importing on desktop, not that you can use the same profile on both at the same time.

β€œThe next app version will allow using your mobile profile from desktop app.” I understood that it will work seamlessly.

You can export database from a phone and import it in desktop client now, right? Or am I missing something?
