Not just that it's everything. It's incentivised appealing to the majority interest and targets pockets (bitcointwitter) and ignores niche interest.

Or even worse (imo) compels people to distort their interests to fit the mold here. Eg you're a musician, you might start making songs about bitcoin or stacking or etc, you're an artist, you might start drawing the bitcoin logo into your work. And it's not even just zaps tho, it's just attention/recognition or whatever. You might get some appreciation/treated as a novelty but this is a birocointwitter forum, so long term you will adapt or leave (most people leave).

And this doesn't even touch on the worst nostr meta, which is not all that different, but the taste makers here (let's call this the Derek Meta lol, no offence Derek). And this just so happens to also align with bitcointwitter; posting style and content, in jokes and often carried over clout etc etc. Nostr clients pretty much have a recommended user list (which never seems to change) which cements and keeps a fairly rigid bitcointwitter2 meta here.

These obviously work together, and it's more complicated than this. But yeah this is my read on it.

I agree. This makes a lot of sense. People want an influx of normies but it’s definitely geared towards that niche

And when people have given feedback (moreso in the past, there hasn't really been waves of new users) it's poo-pooed. When people said it's too much bitcoin chat the feedback is met with "They're not ready for freedom' 'theyre addicted to the algo' etc. Their very valid complaint is totally ignored, treated as untrue and with a pathetic (very bitcointwitter) IM SO PUNKROCK MAAAN attitude. Lol

I never thought about it that way. But yes, valid point. I guess it’s a self fulfilling prophecy since the people here (the ones that stay) are mostly on the bitcoin side.

Nostr doesn't have an algorithm, but if you want anyone to pay attention to your notes it better be about Bitcoin, at least superficially.

This is why on Plebs there’s content filter packs and people can completely block Bitcoin/Crypto related videos.

That’s a cool feature but it doesn’t solve the issue that 7fqx mentions since the core of people that stay are “Bitcoin friendly”

For now. But its purpose is for the crowd who are cypher/cyberpunks and support decentralization and who don’t want or care about bitcoin/crypto related topics. With those things capable of being removed it should help attract more users.

Nostr clients really should have a short setup walkthrough and ask if you like bitcoin/crypto and other topics and if not then it hides anything that has those mentioned. Otherwise, I think we’re doomed to being mostly what we are now in terms of niche user base.

Yes, I have argued ad nauseum with people on Mastodon/Lemmy who are advocates of decentralization and privacy, but ironically don’t like Bitcoin or other crypto because their soy diet makes them think the tech is boiling the oceans.

It’s not even hyperbole. I’ve got nothing against vegans. I was one for 8yrs. But goddamn Mastodon/Lemmy is infested with the extreme versions who think you’re a Nazi if you eat a beef burger. And they all hive mind around the notion that Bitcoin was single-handedly destroying the earth. Although, now the media has told them it’s AI datacenters so it’s less complaints about Bitcoin these days. But to my surprise the so called “anarchists” over there sure love their fiat, to a system they supposedly hate 🙄

Could be fun if a few more of these idiots were here. I can’t promise I’d be nice to them though 🤭

I can see how it blocks the slogans. Does it manage to block the images and "memes". (How many times will we see the the McDonald's meme this bear market?)

It’s just a keyword-based filter at this point. Images/video would require AI interpreted scanning.

I always find it hilarious though when they spent less than a week here, wrote 2-3 notes, didn’t engage but complain about lack of engagement. Hard to take those seriously. And if we’re being honest, there’s a lot like that

This is true.

But at the same time there are dozens of npubs I used to love interacting with that are no longer posting. Running plebs vs zombies monthly is eye opening to how many interesting accounts there are who used to post non Bitcoin oriented stuff that have fallen off.

A lot who saw the promise of Nostr as a freedom protocol, not a Bitcoin chat room. But I think they just eventually get bored of the meta, have few interactions with their posts, so they leave because it's boring.

I think there is something to be said in general that modern life is pretty niche, there really is no such thing as main stream anymore. It is in general just hard to connect with others about your interests because nobody gives a shit. 😂

I don't know, i don't think that is fair.

They are probably looking for topics and aren't finding it or not finding very much of it. If you are into a particular topic eg trains or warhammer, how many accounts will you find on nostr? how many posts can you reply to? how many people will reply to you with an in depth knowledge on the topic?

I don’t think it’s fair to dismiss the entire thing when they didn’t even try. Many of us speak about Bitcoin sure. But we’re not one dimensional either. It’s not because there aren’t many accounts that speak just about trains that you can’t have that conversation with someone here. I disagree

You can speak about bitcoin on The Trains Forum, you might even like it to begin with. But you will go somewhere else other than The Train Forum when you want to discuss utxos. And you probably will eventually stop talking about bitcoin on the Train Forum. And if you only use a train once in a while, you dot have a trian t-shirt and have not that much of an interest in trains, you'll probably leave The Train Forum.

I disagree with that premise. This is not a Bitcoin chatroom. Sure, a lot of people are from Bitcoin Twitter. But most of the time I talk about other subjects with people here. I took the time to get to know them and didn’t dismiss it after a week 🤷🏾
