I have the hankering to write another historical fiction novel (yes, I am a published author). Two scenarios have caught my imagination:

1. Early 12th century where a medieval monk (likely a Templar) figures out these strange new numerals from the Moors and secretly builds the financial system that enable long distance trade.

2. Mid-sixties, where a secret government agency figures out asymmetric cryptography (before Whitfield Diffie) and builds a communications system to thwart enemies in the Cold War.
