Contrary to popular belief, cathedrals are not designed all at one time. In fact, they're almost like a living organism in that parts are torn down and rebuilt, changed and new parts added. And construction and reconstruction happens over many centuries, creating the building that stands today.
The vision of the catherdral builders have probably never been to build a garbage dump place.
