Bitcoin Daily Dose: 5-17-25

History: Mt. Gox Hacked, 19 June 2011

A hacker obtains the credentials of an official auditor at the Mt. Gox bitcoin exchange and downloads a slightly outdated user database containing email addresses and weakly hashed passwords. With administrator-level access, they flood the site with fake sell orders for non-existent bitcoins, crashing the price to $0.01 per coin. Mt. Gox reverses the fraudulent trades, suspends trading for a week to bolster security, and two other major exchanges briefly pause operations to review their own systems. Later, the leaked database is exploited to attack MyBitcoin wallet service users who reused passwords across both platforms, leading to the theft of over 4,019 BTC from approximately 600 wallets.
