Same and I really saw the difference between the before and the after, while building my own thing. The latter has been amazing !
Of course but then the incentives are different, *generally* the free part of the product degrades over time and the paid service gradually gets a greater and greater focus.
Though, I really like the idea of "releases only for paying customers and older versions free." but in some cases it might be tricky to implement / very easy to bypass. Damus has done it and I wonder how successful it has been.
The key to having two-tiered pricing is including things in the top-tier that aren't directly the software.
