on a tangent but i've always had a weird sympathy for gorby. i get the feeling he really was a good socialist born and bred and he thought he really had to do what he did to save the Union. and even when it was clear it wouldn't be saved he trusted the west to some degree when they pledged to help the ex-Pact states and not viciously loot and exploit them

My dad thought he meant well too. Maybe he did but he dropped the ball somewhere imo. My parents said the late 90s were pretty scary in Russia but idk I was tiny.
