How about Electrum on linux? Install a system on USB to use ONLY for Bitcoin transactions.

Research coldcars or seedsigner for a proper storage. Or build a real cold wallet (NEVER ONLINE) from old laptop/PC. This takes a bit of skill not to fuck it up. That's why hardware wallets are a good compromise for the beginning.

One way or another, ALWAYS make a couple of backups of your seed words. Keep them safe and if possibly on different locations. NEVER ONLINE.
