I am not from the "zaps is a replacement for likes camp".

Let's forget about zaps for a second and really look at likes from a more positive angle. It's a way to say "hey, I saw your post and appreciated it"

I'm a fan of custom reactions for that reason.

I guess what I'm saying is, remove likes but replace with more ways to interact in a meaningful way (other than a text reply)

Someone has to rip the band-aid at some point!

Sure, the custom emoji likes are good. But they should tally, so a gif reply only wouldn't cut it unless you shrunk any gifs to an icon.

Why should they tally though? Then you get in to the territory of scoring systems.

I don't know if onboarding more people is a good excuse for repeating the same old mistakes.

I should add, I'm not sure I am right, I flip flop all of the time. I was requesting Primal add custom emoji support just the other week.

I'm just questioning the whole thing.

I'm rather addicted to posting on nostr, so I feel like I'm just feeding in to the thing that I really don't like.

I feel you; bots can corrupt like counts. To me, this is more of a long term concern. I think this is a transition which will play out naturally as a result of non-fiat incentives.

Old social media didn't want to fix it (astroturfing) and was protected by fiat incumbency, but once we become the new social media, people will have the prosperity and freedom to migrate to more sensible solutions organically.

But for now, people have enough new stuff to learn while switching to Nostr IMO.

Fair points 🤝

For example, I'd zap you but Alby rugged me so now I have to figure out a new extension and how to migrate my wallet 🤷‍♂️

That is a very quick and mistaken conclusion. What exactly is your problem?

Yes, upon further review I am still able to use Alby wallet with the 'fee credit' system. Good enough for now, I suppose.

We have replaced our custodial set up with a sovereign one. Hard step but important and good one! Hope you enjoy self-custody!

I agree self-custody is best but paying or having to run pc 24/7 isn't the best deal. There should be a minimal effort option for onboarding. I guess this is good enough for now.

Alby rugged me too. I hope someone starts a class action lawsuit against them and they all end up in prison.
