Gregory IV, the Teacher, Metropolitan of Ţara Românească, faced a dilemma in the 1820s. Wallachia was ravaged by war, famine, and plague. Seeing his flock suffer, he opened the Metropolitan treasury to provide food, medicine, and shelter to all, irrespective of their background. When criticized for depleting the Church's wealth, he famously said, "The true treasure of the Church is the people, not gold." Pray that more leaders will see the true wealth lies in serving others.
