Ok guys this is one I’ve been excited about posting for a while, as it is one I personally fly with a lot of dignity.
Part 15 of my #Pride #vexillology series: Polyamory
Designed in 1995, the polyamorous flag represents all of us who have the natural ability to love multiple people simultaneously. This love is not lessened or limited by having multiple partners. For polyamorous people, love is not a finite resource, and having a deep, meaningful connection with one partner does not cut off our ability to potentially have the same type of relationship with other people.
Symbolically, the flag contains the following:
blue = openness & honesty among all partners in multiple relationships.
red = love, passion, and desire.
black = solidarity with people “in the closet”, who have to hide their relationships from the outside world.
In the center, the Greek letter pi represents two things:
1. The first letter of polyamory
2. It references the mathematical symbol, an irrational number whose value is known to be infinite. This is an acknowledgment of the infinite relationship possibilities in ethical non-monogamy.
There is much debate among the polyamorous community about the flag, as many people find it jarring or just outright ugly. I personally don’t hate it, but I understand why people do. There have been many variants created in recent years, but my personal favorite pays serious homage to the original, with a slight change to the symbol in the center. I have included it here.
