The crime in DC is mostly concentrated in certain parts of the city. Particularly across the river in SE.
It occasionally spills over to the city proper but it’s pretty rare. That being said, my building was shot up last year and there’s been multiple shootings on my block over the years. Roaming gangs of teens were terrorizing neighborhoods this summer.
All in all it’s probably a good thing, the local government here is so fucking incompetent.
Yeah, I’m pretty familiar.
It’s not Baltimore but the “don’t cross MLK blvd” rule certainly applies there.

They’re not incompetent, their lack of competence is directly related to their level of public theft.
