Are paid relays free to READ, and paid only to WRITE? Or am I misunderstanding that?

That’s correct. I expect that to change with some relays once NIP42 (client authentication) is more widely implemented.

Thanks, yeah I also just tested with a new account and added only paid relays, and I could still see stuff.
