I wouldn’t call it altruistic or say the cost is significantly higher as far as running just a core node vs a lightning node, but yeah that’s overall pretty accurate. And it can def be way more costly with high-fee force closes. Lightning isn’t perfect. I definitely wouldn’t recommend significant funds on it either. Lightning withdrawals from exchanges to something like mutiny and then sending to your node and swapping out to cold storage is an example of non-altruistic, non-routing use case (better privacy… i think)

if i use a custodial LN wallet and send to my core btc address, i am not losing any privacy.

I haven't touched the internet without Linux Tor/VPN, LineageOS in many years, ever since using BTC and before that.
