So ‘liberal’ does not equate to Democrat politically. Liberal in the traditional enlightened sense is also more Republican aligned.

No, they mean "liberal" as in "leftist". It is simply leftists abandoning the Democratic Party.

There's a big political space open for people who are left-wing, but not woke.
