The floor of the Siena Cathedral is one of the largest and most valuable examples of a complex of marble inlays, a decorative project that lasted five centuries, from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century.

As with the cathedral's construction, the floor is also inextricably linked with the history of the city and its art: for this reason, over the centuries the Sienese have spared no resources for its creation first and for its conservation later.

Composed of more than sixty scenes, it is generally covered in the most frequented areas by sheets of masonite, except once a year, for about two months, between the end of August and the end of October.
