This letter convinced the members of the Missouri House General Laws Committee to amend HB 1165.
HB 1165, among other things, aims to redefine "money" in the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC). It aims to exclude any medium of exchange that was not previously authorized or adopted by the government excluding cryptocurrency, but including Central Bank Digital Currency as a recognized medium of exchange.
South Dakota and Florida have been pushing back recently against similar bills. Your state likely has a bill with the same goals. If so, perhaps this letter may be of use in your fight to preserve your state’s economic freedom.
Below is the response from Representative Jeff Myers:
“Hello-
Thank you for contacting my office in regard to House Bill 1165. I appreciate all of the input I get from my constituents and fellow Missourians.
The General Laws Committee Members heard your grave concerns and have worked together to address them by forming an amendment to HB 1165, that is supported by the bill sponsor.
In the bill, defining "Electronic chattel paper" - means chattel paper evidenced by a record or records consisting of information stored in an electronic medium, will be removed from the bill language completely. Additionally, the phrase “electronic money” will be removed from the bill language in all occurrences.
These specific changes to HB 1165 should alleviate the concerns that you and many other Missourians had, and allow for HB 1165 to be supported.
Please continue to stay involved. I, and many other Members of the House of Representatives, appreciate people like you who are willing to share their opinions with elected officials.
With sincere appreciation,
Representative Jeff Myers | District 42
201 West Capitol Avenue - Room 116
Jefferson City, MO 65101
Office: (573) 751-2689”
