P.S. A gradual weakening of a hash function is the much more likely scenario, not breaking all at once. The warning signs typically come years in advance. Plenty of time for Bitcoin Core to make a clean transition.

We will probably move over to sha-512 algorithm if and when this happens

Or blake3 that'd be my pick.

But absolutely there's no reason to rationally expect SHA-256 will suddenly break, there will be plenty of time to transition to a new hash function.
