The other big failing of Mellon Collie is that Jimmy Chamberlin is dialing it in. The drumming on MC lacks the fire and rhythmic richness of Gish and Dream. D'Arcy and Iha were clearly replaceable, and their enhanced role in recording MC didn't improve on the Pumpkins sound recorded by Corgan. But if Corgan is the brains, face, and hands of the band, Jimmy is clearly the heart and soul. His return to the form - and to the band - on the Zeitgeist album makes it for me.
