it's an incandescent carbon lamp, basically, like the pre-tungsten days
these things blare out infrared light and warm everything that the light hits, and it's a huge part of the light being picked up by the camera
they warm you up, YOU, not the air, not the fucking radiator heating the air, you point it at you and in ten seconds you are warm
