The world is big enough for compliments (likes) AND tips (zaps).

Friends don't tip you, customers do. "That was funny, my good friend. In lieu of laughter, have this dime for entertaining me."

Customers don't compliment you, friends do.

So: what it this place? A marketplace or the best backyard barbecue in the neighborhood? Or a mix of both?

I think the various symbols allow us to simply respond in a cocise way. A picture is worth a thousand words, etc. Simply: it communicates.
