I dunno... The Sermon on the mount, at a couple of chapters long, is the longest recorded sermon and it was the opposite of hellfire and brimstone.

Additionally, Jesus made references to ghenna a place that actually existed, it was a burning trash heap and sometimes even bodies were thrown there. If I recall correctly the other word that is translated into "hell" in English refered to a valley were child sacrifice happened, that is the burning of live children to demons. Those are more likely allegories that people of his day understood.

I say this with love. Picking out a particular sermon out of many many sayings and saying since this doesn't mention that therefore it is not true makes no sense. Ghenna is a place people refer to hell because it is a representation of it. It is a fire that never goes out. I am somewhat new to being a real Christian so I don't have all the answers for you. But I would suggest you don't lean on your own understanding. Read the Bible and try to get from it what it actually says. This is a really good sermon on Hell that I watched last night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVzbh_dLq3s

Also I need to ask you this. What is Jesus saving us from if not Hell? Why did he dies for us? I would not just throw out an answer here. Please back up your answer with scripture.

Gotta go to church... Will formulate a response when I get home.

God accomplished many things by having his Son become incarnate and die on Calvary. Through Christ God revealed the definitive truth about himself (Rom 5:8, cf. Jn 14:7-10); reconciled all things, including humans, to himself (2 Cor 5:18-19; Col 1:20-22), forgave us our sins (Ac 13:38; Eph 1:7); healed us from our sin-diseased nature (1 Pet 2:24); poured his Spirit upon us and empowered us to live in relation to himself (Rom 8:2-16 ); and gave us an example of what it looks like when we live in the kingdom (Eph 5:1-2; 1 Pet 2:21). Yet, I believe all these facets of Christ’s work can be understand as aspects of the most fundamental thing Christ came to accomplish: namely, to defeat the devil and his minions (Heb 2:14; 1 Jn 3:8). He came to overcome evil with love.

God can forgive sins he doesn't need divine child abuse to do that.. He hates it when people abuse their kids, why would He? He also tells us to forgive our brother 77 x 7 times, not to abuse our own kids instead of whoever has offended us. Why would He command that if He wasn't willing to do it for us?
