Chasing success is devil's game.

Maybe its the idea of success thats the issue and not the pursuit in itself.

chasing the trappings of success perhaps?

Can you elucidate this to me? What trappings do you mean: possessions?

possessions, social millieu, fame, praise, conveniences.

Confusing a means for an end. These are not goals to chase but methods of chasing ones goals.

So I would agree, being trapped by these will not bring happiness.

I think it's the "chasing" part.

Of you view 'success' from only a financial means then yes.

If one has a broader take then it can be good. Many chase the goal of creating a world safe from pedophiles. They will never reach success but not chasing it would be bad.

In that regard, I must imagine Sisyphus happy.

Yes, I'm using "success" in the mainstream hustling world definition: chasing of career, money, possessions, fame...

Not for a worthy cause, etc.

Then I would agree.

All of those are means to an end but many are convinced they are the ends.
