The smell of freshly cut grass is actually a plant distress signal. When you mow your lawn, the grass releases volatile organic compounds as a defense mechanism. Its believed this might be a way for them to warn other plants of danger or attract beneficial insects.

Interesting. I just love the smell of fresh cut grash though.
