Happy Tavern is a great sounding domain ain't it? 🤠 Why don't you get a nip05 at the Tavern and join the club. We got a relay :) (and I'm working on more stuff too)

“LNbits”

“Umbrel”

😟

I'm working on my own stuff to replace it. But this is secure and working at the moment. All I'm doing is nip05s and note backup right now. The lnbits will be harder to replace for me... But a custom relay isn't too far off. Does it make you feel better if I told you my server is raid 10 and also backed up once a week to another remote server? I'm a hobbyist and I won't claim to be able to provide the service you can. 10k sats is just a pretty good filter to stop spam.

Oh, that was not about the service. I just hate LNbits and “node distributions” for many reasons.

Unfortunately I am stuck with LNbits as there is no alternative but I made it deposit only.

Unrelated to that but any reason for going RAID 10 instead of something like RAID 5? XOR is pretty optimized to the point you’ll probably saturate memory bandwidth easily and you get more capacity.

And for weekly backups: I do hourly ones to an on site server, and daily to off site.

Proxmox makes it really easily. Also, setting retention rules helps: 12 backups hourly, 14 backups daily, 8 backups weekly, 6 backups monthly

But it also costs a ton.

I literally just replaced my raid 5 array with a 10. I had 3 drives but through circumstances got a 4th one just like them. Since I had 4 of the same drives when I rebuilt, I just went with 10.

I would still recommend RAID 5. The overhead is minimal and capacity waste drops by 2x

I wouldn't use a umbrel "node" for actually making transactions to and custodying things. I mean, it's a passthrough for lightning. But for personal use, I do feel comfortable without a dedicated machine on another local network for security... And it's way easier for me to just setup core than all the umbrel stuff. Umbrel just makes having a lot of stuff under one roof in a bunch of containers really easy.

I'm learning. I'm a year into doing this as a hobby. I still need to really overhaul my website design.
