My wife used to give me crap for always locking our doors while we were in the house.

I explained that the cops might chase someone down the street and they will seek an open door to escape.

Consider that most states have you the guilty party for killing somebody unless you were reasonably fearing for life.

Coming outside when you could have stayed in will probably get you convicted in such situations.

I’d stay in and wait with gun at low ready…..
