“Renowned expert”? You’d want that name so you can look up relevant research but considering scales, I’d suggest nonsense. Think about eruptions. The energy levels are insane. There’s a temperature drop over time within rocks around geothermal wells (am no expert here) but the areal extent is not big enough probably to truly have an effect at caldera scale.
Geothermal energy is great and will grow substantially but I’d suggest reading technical papers because the more money flows in, the more bullshit will flow out
It certainly seems technically challenging.
I’d always consider the hubris element with this stuff. There was a suggestion 50 odd years ago to reduce earthquake intensity by releasing fault stress. It was specifically calculating using nukes strategically placed along San Andreas fault line. Once they figured that using the entire global stockpile would not be sufficient to potentially drop “the big one” by 1 point of seismic moment, the whole concept was quickly ignored.
We like to consider ourselves as powerful as a species but scale is a big factor with these things and very humbling when calculated
