Tearing up this section of lawn has served more than one purpose. For work I've been on a project that generated a lot of cardboard packaging waste - rather than paying disposal fees, why not put it to better use?

I've dug down about 300mm deep, put the grass I tore out at the bottom and covered it with cardboard, this can all break down and enrich the soil while forming a bit if a barrier to stop the grass growing back through.

I'm using nothing but hand tools so this is going to take a while, I'll keep posting updates as I go. This is probably the biggest patch I've ever done on this block but don't be afraid to give it a go at your own place.

Not the first time I've done this, it works a treat. It's not as fast as just using a rotary hoe and then planting but it's worth it for the reduction in weeds

Does the cardboard break down, or did you mean the grass breaks down underneath the cardboard? I usually let it dry and set it on fire. I don't know what's better.

They both break down together to enrich the soil, the cardboard stops the grass from growing back up through the new garden bed and taking over again. It's one of those varieties that just keeps coming back if you don't cover it.
