There's a deep technical difference between a system that's purely custodial (bank accounts, stock portfolios, Wallet of Satoshi, Kraken) and one that's a mix of both like ecash or sidechains, where the IOU is non-custodial but the Bitcoin it represents is not on your control.

Custodial is ok because it adequately represents the risk to users who already are used to this term. No Jedi word tricks necessary. We need to be as truthful as we can.
