Basically, the guy in charge of running the franchise left last year, and started his own company using a trademarked name, which means he has some kind of rights. But the original company also has all the distribution rights, so he can't do anything yet.
Either he left because nothing was getting done, or nothing was getting done because he planned on leaving. Either way, it's strange for something like this to be made public.
It could be a good thing. If negotiations go well, production could finally start back up. It could also just cause trademark Hell where nothing can ever be produced. Or the original company could wind up with all the rights, and production could continue under new creative direction.
If you've been following it since 2018, it's interesting because we finally have a hint of an answer as to why production just stopped, and has never gotten off the ground again.
