I heard about it maybe 2 and a half years ago. I'm on the r/redditalternatives sub, and was (still looking) for a Reddit alternative that wasn't ban happy or censorship.
I used the fediverse and liked how you can pretty much do exactly that depending on what server. So I was curious is there was a fediverse reddit alternative.
I found lemmy and was super excited. But it was so so so, fucking dead. I'd say, maybe 10 new posts a day. Not many reply.
It sucked.
Then I started acting up lol like I always do when I see people post dumb fucking shit. And I started to get Banned.
So I researched for a free speech instance, and joined wolfballs instance. Where I met my peeps !
But sadly wolfballs came to a close eventually and stopped using Lemmy until the Exodus. I already had an account on exploding-heads.com so I logged in and sure enough my peeps were still there !
Then exploding-heads.com came to a close and I joined lemdit.com where I met some more really cool peeps but they came to a close to.
And I got banned from others instances though for trolling. I couldn't help it people just saying dumb shit and posting stupid shit acting as if they're smart I just have to call it out it's one of my pet peeves. But after that I'm done with it it's too stressful it's really really toxic and I don't want a part of it
Best part about Nostr is no one can shut it down or take your account. Zero downtime 😎
I was never really affected by that stuff on Fedi because I ditch accounts after a few months, but it’s cool that that can’t even theoretically happen here.
Or maybe you saw an influencer post on Instagram... You never know 🤔💅
I saw amethyst on f-droid and it pushed my buttons so I installed it and here we are. No prior knowledge or interest.

It depends on who was explaining it.
I friggin LOVE almost anything decentralized and distributed, so, that's why I bothered to try it in the first place. So far, I'm glad I did.

It's interesting to see the prior step too.
I was tired of being bombarded by centralized media. I still have more changes to make in my life. I can't wait for a marketplace like Nostr, similar to eBay, or a service like Uber or Airbnb, to bid farewell to the chaotic situations caused by people with ill intentions.
Same here. Saw a lot of nostr clients on f-droid.
On boarding is a lot simpler and quicker (than Lemmy). It is amazing.
