What's especially messed up about the Google Nest thing is that these are thermostats people paid $100+ for and they own them. They shouldn't get the rug pulled out from under them like this.

Customers should be able to expect that their thermostats will work as well as they did when they bought it. At a bare minimum, Google should release the server side source code so people can run their own server to maintain the ability to connect to their thermostat over wifi.

And before anyone asks "what, are they supposed to run their servers forever without compensation?" 😭

No, they should design their products so they don't need to run a server forever for a bloody thermostat to work! 🔥

But if they want to push this flawed design, give people the option to subscribe to the service or not, and make it clear subscribing might not always be an option in the future so people understand what they're signing up for. 🧐

And if they can't do any of that, and it's cloud service of no changing the temperature with your phone, then yeah, I expect them to keep running the service until nobody uses it anymore. If that's 50 years later, well maybe they should have thought of that at design time. If they pick a flawed design, they should live with the consequences.
