Sorry schist. Medium grade metamorphic rock
Oh yes! Thank you for the id. There is much of this type of rock around and I have been wondering.
If you try walking in different directions, you may see texture change. If lucky, you might start to see small roundish red crystals. Never know, and I don’t know your local geology but if you do, those are garnets.
Yes! I found garnets this past week. A new local friend took me to a sweet spot. 
Some nice crystal faces on some of them. If you walk in different directions you may see a change in size. If you find you see slightly bigger, keep going in that direction and you could potentially find some better crystals

I found this in that area and tho there is no apparent garnet, it stood out to me as different bc its deep purple color and i kept thinking if i tumble it, would there be garnet on the inside?
Hard to say. That looks like it’s been eroded in a river. Takes natural form to make it easier to identify and I’m just a geologist so would take a hammer to it 🙄
