PayPal has permanently locked GrapheneOS out of their donations....

"We currently receive more donations via Monero than Bitcoin..... Monero is the only reliable trickle of many small crypto donations."

"We could end up in a similar situation to the one we're having with PayPal if we set up Lightning poorly by using a custodial service or use software/hardware which ends up failing and doesn't have proper backups for the money in channels."

"We don't see much point in using Lightning unless we're running our own Lightning node on top of a Bitcode full node with local hardware and proper backups. We want to do it but it's not easy to do it the way we want. We aren't simply going to deploy someone's Docker images, etc."

"We're in the process of determining the best way for us to host an always-on local Lightning node with a WireGuard tunnel from a cloud server. We also need to figure out hosting lnurl so that people can actually use it."

Meanwhile....

"We need easy-to-use, self-custody lightning wallets..."

Apparently much easier said than done.

Yeah unfortunately PayPal be like that which reminds me I probably should stop using it

Seriously GrapheneOS get a lightning wallet setup, since you have a full Bitcoin node already it's easy to install LND and a frontend like RTL to manage it easily with a GUI. Lightning Terminal can auto manage inbound and outbound liquidity. You can also setup a lightning address with LNBits or BTCPayServer self-hosted.

You'll get shitloads of zaps and no blocks ⚑⚑⚑

They said they don’t run any nodes for donations. All hard wallet addresses for receiving.

I know but they also called out how too much of the LN ecosystem is custodial which is a fair criticism - I laid out how to address that with the tools they have.

The node management doesn't have to run on the node either.

Monero nodes are super simple. Better in every aspect to lightning. Also BTCPAYserver has monero option.

And ofc you can't use Lightning on hardware wallets yet.
