I agree, regarding something easily assignable to a particular person, like income taxes. Since there should be no taxation without representation.
I would tend to make federal voting sex-neutral, but require the ability/fitness and willingness to sign on to the draft. And you should have to renew your draft every ten years, starting at 18, at which point you can renew your voting registration. I think that would also solve for the problems we currently have, like gerontocracy, vote-buying, people voting themselves more state monies, foreigners voting, voting being tied to driver's licenses, dead or unconscious people voting, and etc.
It would send a stronger message about what a (federal) government is primarily focused on: mounting a common defense.
These are all the people who would fight.
These are all the people who get to decide, if we fight.
I am morally opposed to (young) women signing up for the draft, as that's the demographic version of eating the seed corn, but I wouldn't make that a federal law.
I think people would naturally tend to self-sort and there is a high cost to nanny-stating everyone. I would just raise the stakes way up and see who's down.
