-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-

The “Evil Eye” is an ancient and near universal concept found in many cultures, believed to be a form of harmful energy cast through a glance filled with envy, jealousy, or ill intent.

This focused, negative energy whether conscious or unconscious can disrupt a person’s energetic balance, leading to misfortune, fatigue, or emotional imbalance.

Its roots trace back to ancient Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian traditions, yet the archetype of the powerful, destructive gaze appears throughout the world, where the eye has long been seen as a vessel of both perception and influence.

The methods of protection vary across cultures, yet they share the same purpose to deflect or absorb this harmful influence. Among the most well known protective symbols are the Hamsa hand, the blue Nazar bead, and red or black thread bracelets, all worn as amulets to shield the wearer.

In many traditions, salt and smoke (from sage, frankincense, or myrrh) are used for energetic cleansing, and ritual practices are performed regularly to maintain spiritual protection. These are not only acts of defense, but also tools of awareness, guiding us back to intention, presence, and spiritual clarity.

In modern psychological terms, the Evil Eye can be seen as a metaphor for unconscious projection when others cast their unresolved fears, envy, or inner conflict onto us. If we are not self aware, we may absorb these projections and allow them to shape our sense of self or emotional state.

True protection, then, lies not only in outer symbols, but in inner work, self reflection, energetic integrity, and the ability to remain anchored in our own light even under the shadow of external judgment. In this way, the Evil Eye becomes not just a threat, but a hidden teacher, calling us inward, asking us to remember where our real power resides.
