Sometimes when you ask for feedback on a design, people will just make something up just to act smart. It’s much better to observe people using the design.

Its a skill refined in school.

Offering bogus feedback?

Yes. Lots of people learn in school the skill of making it seem they are following rather than actually following.

“Proof of Listening”

It's unfortunately well rewarded in corporate land as well

Ideally done in a way where users don't know they are being observed

Yeah that definitely impacts things.

This is meta but I think this is also why they feel the need to make something up. Because they are being observed by the designer being asked for feedback, they feel some pressure to perform in a certain way.

Yeah and they probably feel bad saying your design sucks 😂

This is why I hate paying for user testing. People offer feedback that is unnatural or nit picky.

100%, if done at all should be on small sample sizes and as hands off as possible (not observing them for example).

Have witnessed it first hand. It sucks.

Best to use screen recordings. More natural. Only downside is you can’t hear them!

Some tools such as Maze let you record voice and video

I've found this to be a problem within the team itself too
