My nephew was the last cut from his high school hockey varsity team this year. Very very good team, tough to make.

I never said, sorry you didn’t make it. Or you’re better than another kid, tough break. Or politics.

Nope, I told him he’s lucky. Men can all look back on two, maybe three times in their lives when they were truly tested. This is one of those times for him. He’s good enough to make it next year as a senior, and now has an awesome goal to work towards. Get a little bigger, stronger, focused. There is no sweeter feeling than attaining a goal & overcoming a setback. He’s lucky to be given this test. And guaranteed the kid will be a team leader next season!!

Was he super bummed or did he understand ..?

Totally understood. They only needed to fill 1 defense spot as the team had a lot returning (after a great year last year). Making it past tryouts to the first practice meant he did extremely well in tryouts. First accomplishment was making an easy decision for the coaches very hard. I was very proud of him with that.
