A fascinating history of Japanese major earthquakes and tsunamis. Some are truly horrifying - 30 meter waves.

Some have happened multiple times in the 2011 affected areas.

In Indonesia also once as high as 30 m.

Andaman earthquake in 2004, at that time Indonesian people did not know the term tsunami.

Only some places know the same term as tsunami, for example the term Smong, local wisdom in Simeulue Aceh.

I met someone in 1995 who had just returned from Kobe after being part of an international rescue team. Bizarrely he was on a boat just off shore from Kobe when the quake struck and he said the thing that freaked him most was it was just 20 seconds. I'm not sure if he even realised there was a quake until he watched the clouds of dust and smoke start to rise from the city.
