Looking into distant history people seem to have no problem understanding that purpose of war is expansion of the empire - accumulation of power over more people and territories. There is understanding that the soldier is a tool of a Machiavellian ruler.

When it comes to modern history and present, sentimental narratives dominate. Most find themselves in a fairy-tale where Good is fighting the Evil. Well, at least we are lucky that we happen to be on the right side. 🤔

I think likely the sentimental narratives are not a choice as much as the result of a very intentional and targeted propaganda campaign.
