I have an old pc, i3 6th generation, 4Go RAM, 1To HDD.

I would like to make it a home server, do you think it’s possible with theses specs ?

I was thinking TrueNAS or Embassy OS

If not, what use can I make of it ?

The 4 gg ram makes that pretty rough jf you are gonna be running core, electrs, lightning + anything else. Not an immediate concern but 1 tb hard drive could be an issue soon enough, especially if using for anyting other than the blockchain record.

Not necessarily Bitcoin node etc. I can use it as storage + media server.

I will see if the RAM is expandable

Maybe add more RAM depending on what you’ll be “serving”, but that should work quite well. Save for the ram, that’s way more powerful than the rpi4 I’m currently using as my home server running a Bitcoin node, file server, a personal relay, and a few other goodies.

I will see if I can expand that RAM, you are running Raspberry OS or something else ?

I’m running Umbrel, link below. Educated guess, ram for your system should be pretty cheap. 8 would be great, 16 ideal.

I’m running Umbrel on a second pc and it’s 🔥 , thanks for the help ! 💜

Your guess was right on the money, max RAM for the laptop is 12Go, and 8Go RAM costs 21 dollars. That’s my project for this weekend

You should be able to find a guide for your exact laptop on how to do it. It’s usually pretty simple.

That’s not gonna be a problem ! Thanks !

Awesome! 🤙

#[4] is much better

Definitely something I’ve looked in to. I’ve got no real loyalty to Umbrel, other than laziness about switching.

TrueNAS (formerly FreeNAS) will work perfectly if you want to use just for file server - embassyos_amd64.iso - min 👉Single vCPU Core 2Ghz 4GB RAM 64GB Storage - it will work too - recommend keep os on 16Gb SSD/SDCARD or USB - not to confuse with botcoin + lnd node - it may run too but will be slow or get overloaded #[0]

Here’s some info from the official documentation:
