Have you been shadowbanned on nostr?

Amethyst has deployed a showban system that prevents new users seeing your notes if 5 popular accounts mute or report you.

You check if you're being shadowbanned on the amethyst app with www.mutable.top/

(Note this only shows public mutes so if it's amethyst users who are coordinating a shadowban against you there's not really a way to check as far as I can tell.

How does that work with mutes? They are private, and other users can not see them, so how do they get used to shadowban people?

Reports exist, are public, and work this way. If you don't want this you can disable it by unchecking the "Warn on reports" option in security settings.

You forgot public mutes?

How do you even get 95 mutes?

Ez, just speak truth and don't stop

Someone told me I should have an alt just for arguing. I made this account to be for non conflict, shitposting memes.

Truth bombing but only with memes.

I haven't bothered making an alt yet, I got triggered a couple days ago and said to much to a bigot.

I really don't want to make a toxic environment for myself on here like I did on Facebook just arguing with people all day, it's a struggle sometimes.

Sounds hard to tell if you're on track to be silenced or not. Best of luck

I'm same as you bushy. This is intended to be my long term handle for nostr, and it's too small an ecosystem to be a dickhead imo

Or too small an ecosystem to USE??????????

Haven't seen you around in a few days

Been a bit busy past week. Will be back to posting and reading more tomorrow :)

Thanks for noticing.

I like the small eco for finding cool weirdos, like you, who I otherwise wouldn't be friends with. At least a couple dozen people I really enjoy who I'm certain wouldn't be found elsewhere. I like to joke that I like people who like decentralization. Sort of a second order thing

Glad you're not giving up on it

It's all I use breh

I think maybe you misunderstand how Amethyst's feature works.

If a user has been reported (not muted) by 5 or more npubs THAT YOU FOLLOW, their posts will be hidden FOR YOU, using a warning message showing the pfps of the people you follow who have reported them, and giving you the opportunity to show the hidden message.

So, say you are a new user who has not followed anyone. This means that no-one's posts will be "shadowbanned" for you, because you don't yet have 5 people you are following, let alone who all happened to have reported the same npub. Once you have started following some people there is more and more likelihood that at least 5 of them will have reported some of the same npubs. And yes, this gives popular npubs an outsized ability to coordinate so that the posts from npubs they don't like are hidden from their followers.

This is not the same as being "shadowbanned on Nostr" though. It ONLY affects THEIR followers. Anyone who doesn't follow those popular npubs doesn't have posts hidden from them using this method. Anyone who doesn't use Amethyst doesn't have any posts hidden from them using this method. Anyone can choose to show the hidden message by simply tapping "Show Anyway." Anyone can disable the filtering entirely, if they don't find it useful.

I would wager that most users leave it on, though, because it is incredibly useful. The people who I see complaining about it are typically those who have been reported and muted a lot (by 90+ users, for instance), not just by popular accounts, but by a wide swath of users who don't want to see their content at all.
